Founded in 1985 by R.D. Cathey Jr., a pioneer in the coffee and cocoa sampling industry with over 30 years of experience, Hampton Roads Sampling Inc. was established with a clear objective:
to deliver accurate, unbiased, and dependable sampling and inspection services. Presently the company is run by R.D. Cathey III, who brings extensive experience across coffee and cocoa sampling, inspection, and laboratory testing, with a deep understanding of how quality is evaluated from the point of sampling through final analysis. His background combines hands-on field work with close alignment to analytical laboratories, providing a comprehensive perspective on how representative sampling influences grading, cupping, and test results.

In addition to his operational expertise, R.D. has developed a strong foundation in coffee sensory evaluation and quality assessment, allowing him to connect physical sampling with real-world product performance. This integration of field, laboratory, and sensory insight defines the standard applied across all HRSI services—ensuring accuracy, consistency, and confidence in every stage of evaluation.
